WINNING START FOR UNDER 16'S
The Boys Clubs of Wales Under 16's side made a winning start to their season with a win away at Bridgewater against Somerset. In a tough encounter the team "gelled" well despite a few early setbacks. Somerset made the better start going ahead 10-3 early on in poor conditions. It was the first time that the Boys Clubs of Wales had played together and encouraging signs were seen in the first half though they trailed 17-10 at half time. In the second half the away side produced some fantastic rugby with two tries from Ross Cooper the number 8 from Kenfig Hill. As the conditions got better so did the Boys Club under 16 side. With good play between half backs Evan Price and Josh Tatchel the away side were looking good until around 8 minutes from time when the spirited Somerset side were looking for the winning score. They were camped in the Boys clubs 22 for the remaining time and were grateful for the fantastic scrummaging from Gavin Wood, Tom Evans and Geraint Lawrence in the front row. It was a huge relief when the Boys clubs were awarded a penalty and the last act was for the ball to be kicked out to touch and for the final whistle to be heard. Final score Somerset 24 Boys Clubs of Wales 27. ________________________________________________________________________
Life-changing trip to Nepal
A VOLUNTEER is off to Nepal for a 10-week charity trip.
Nantymoel Boys’ and Girls’ Club youth worker Simon Baker, 20, has been selected to fly out to Asia with Christian Aid on October 15.
He was put forward by the Clubs for Young People Wales and has already been to Germany on a 12-day youth worker exchange.
“I won’t meet the people I’m going out there with until I arrive at Heathrow Airport,” he said.
“It’s a government funded project for Christian Aid. I will be a teaching assistant in the mornings and a builder in the afternoons.
“Then it could be anything from entertainment to sports in the evenings, six days a week. It will be a proper life changing trip.”
Mr Baker, of Heol y Fedwen, Nantymoel, said he has always had a passion for helping people.
“I hope to do more trips in the future but next after Nepal will be a year-long youth work project around Wales,” he said.
“My family are proud of me and I can certainly see myself doing more youth work and volunteering in the future.”
Clubs for Young People Wales training officer Grant Poiner said: “Simon will be working in Nepal for 10 weeks as part of the Platform 2 project.
“Platform 2 is a global volunteering scheme for 18 to 25-year-olds who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to visit a developing country and get involved with global issues of justice and poverty.
“It is funded by the Department for International Development and run by Christian Aid and not-for-profit work and travel experts BUNAC.”

After a short mid week session at Bettws BGC, explaining the finer details of how to hold, use, tie and prepare fishing tackle for sea fishing a practical session was organised to try out the new skills that they had learned!
The day was set for Saturday and a favourite mark being the Barrage at the Marina below Penarth. The reason we favour this venue is that it is safe to park it has public toilets and a small café that opens through the warmer months which offers a great back drop to some of the City's best fishing with Bass, Codling, Whiting and Pout plus various other species being caught through the 12 months of the year.
The age of the young people ranged from 12 to 22 and most never having the chance to fish before this was to be an exciting day that they will not forget in a hurry! If you would like to get involved and get fishing please please contact Cerys on 029 2057 5705

We are delighted to say that CYP UK have been short-listed to be the Royal Mail's official charity.
180,000 posties and other Royal Mail staff across the UK have been asked to vote for their choice - us, Barnardo's or the Prince's Trust.
It's a big challenge, but winning this vote would deliver major financial and voluntary benefits to every club and project in our network for the next 4 years. You, your friends and families can help.
We have 400,000 young people in our network supported by 30,000 volunteers across over 3,500 clubs and projects. If everyone puts up a flier in their window (see below) and gives one to their postie in the next 10 days then we can win.

There were several outstanding performances by the Boys Clubs team, in particular Gareth Atherton of Troedyrhiw who scored two tries. Also at Porthcawl RFC on the weekend the under 16’s were defeated by a strong Bristol Schools outfit.

PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – CYP WALES AND CONNAUGHT PLC
The aim is to develop a Wales-wide training programme which will offer young people new employment opportunities in the construction industry.
The aim will be realised by expanding the existing Connaught training provision to CYP Wales affiliated clubs using a mobile training facility and club premises. This will, primarily, offer ‘taster’ sessions and a foundation course to NVQ1 and NVQ2 standard , progressing to full apprenticeships.
We aim to engage 2000 of CYP membership of 30000 (6.5%) annually in demonstrations of the training and opportunities on offer, followed by ability and skills tests, leading to selecting 50 young people per annum to enter a full training programme.
Apprenticeships will be offered within Connaught and their network of sub-contractors and suppliers. Other employment opportunities will be offered with professional partners, such as architects and surveyors, and also within the Connaught Group. These opportunities will include secretarial and administrative training, quantity surveying, management training. Connaught are keen to offer these opportunities to both young men and young women and, if needed, can provide childcare facilities.
Support partners will be CITB, Construction Skills, Careers Wales, City & Guilds, associated professionals such as architects and surveyors, sub-contractors and suppliers.

Recently Clubs For Young People Wales and Connaught Acadamy launched a partnership at Langland Bay Lifeguard Club. The partnership will provide young people with opportunities to undertake trade apprenticeships and provide much needed rennovation within some of the CYP Wales affiliated clubs. Tony Mainwaring, director of Connaught Wales, said: "The link-up with Clubs for Young People Wales has parallel aims to that of Connaught, both our organisation and Clubs for Young People Wales aim to train and develop people so that they can strive further and achieve more." Connaught operates the Connaught Academy in Caerphilly as one of Wales’ largest skills training centres, and its sponsorship of CYPW’s Wales reflects the commitment to improving the communities in which it works. Langland Bay Lifeguard Club has recently had support from Connaught and is the first of many CYPW projects to be completed across Wales.

On Saturday the 20th October Penysarn Youth Club held a fishing event in Anglesey with the help of Jim Salisbury and Gordon Hayes. 10 young people from Penysarn Youth Club took part and, according to Jim Salisbury, the event was ‘very successful and enjoyable’. Jim also added that a boy caught three carp with one weighing in between 1lb and 3lb. This event took place with the idea of organising a major angling event in April 2008, which will involve 50 young people in all. To prepare for that event Nick Massey, Anglesey Federation of Anglers, will be organising one lesson per month, each being a one hour session, from January to April. Jim Salisbury would like to thank Ken Parry of the Environment Agency, Nick Massey, Penysarn Youth Club as well as the instructors who helped make the event such an enjoyable day out.
By William Jones of St.Cenydd Comprehensive School, Caerphilly, who has undertaken one week's Work Experience at CYP Wales HQ.

Clubs need to bear in mind when hiring self drive minibus for travel to events. Firstly, to drive a minibus over 17 seats (including the driver) requires a special licence called Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) Licence is required to be held. The driver should be over 21 and has a full driving licence, which is issued before 1 January 1997. Such drivers may drive a minibus of up to no more than 17 seats without the need for a PCV, provided it is not for hire or reward. Drivers who current licence was issued after that date would need to make a special application before they can do so.

WANTED FOR NEW BBC3 TV SERIES (Posted 14 June 2007)
CAN YOU HELP us find participants for BBC3's new TV series - Fat Teens Can't Hunt? We want to change ten teenager's lives by giving them the chance to survive for one month in the Australian outback, on food that they have hunted and gathered for themselves. This is back to basics survival, not for the faint hearted.
The ten teenagers chosen for the programme will have to live life as it used to be, in the wild, on a natural unprocessed diet of freshly picked leaves, tubers and fruit with protein from nuts, grubs and meat. This could be the wake up call that could change the way they live their life forever. We are looking for motivated teenagers, age 18-19 to apply. This will be an extremely valuable project for the right individual to take on. Please help us find the right people. If you, or anyone you know is interested in this once in a lifetime opportunity please email us on teens@endemoluk.com <

CYP, Durham & Wales CYP together with NBC & NGC, as part of the ‘Do Somethin’ campaign, organised the 52nd UK Finals at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, the home of the National Watersports Centre boasting spectacular views and scenery which making it an ideal venue for hosting this event. This was the 52nd year that this event has been held.
The Championships this year were supported by Ronhill Ltd, & Surridge Sports who donated prizes and trophies for the event. Many thanks to them
The championships give young people in our movement an opportunity to test their personal fitness against others and many of them actually surprise themselves as to the talent they have for the sport and go on to join local athletic clubs in their region.
The event also gives the many voluntary adults who support the young people an opportunity to make new friends and renew old acquaintances.

The Keystone Award has recently been re-launched!!!!
The award scheme has been developed to accredit the skills, competencies and qualities acquired and demonstrated by young people in clubs and projects affiliated to Clubs for Young People Wales.
Involvement in the Keystone Award Scheme is entirely voluntary and open to participants from school year 7 (aged 11). Young people are required to undertake a range of ‘challenges’ for each award and on completion of each award the successful young person will receive the relevant award certificate. There are four Keystone Awards; these are Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
The new Keystone Award is more user friendly than the previous award with an additional "diary of activity" to accompany the logbook. A significant change is that the Keystone Award is now accredited by OCN.
The Keystone Award has received endorsement from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and once young people are 14 Clubs for Young People Wales will encourage the young people to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Over the next few months Clubs for Young People Wales will be delivering Keystone Award Training for all affiliated clubs / groups within the organisation. If you would like to take part in training please contact me on 029 20575705.

Welsh charities could be £15million better off if more of us donated through payroll giving. Only a third of all charitable donations made in Wales are tax efficient, and this means that charities in Wales are losing out on more than £15 million in unrestricted income every year.
One of the most effective ways for charities to receive tax efficient donations is through payroll giving, and WCVA can now provide a payroll giving agency service for employers and charities, as part of the Giving Wales project. You can make donations to any charity, including Boys and Girls clubs, church or charitable association, Parent Teacher Associations, etc by completing a simple choice form. The minimum donation is £1 per month, and there is no maximum amount. The donation is deducted from your gross pay before tax. This means that for a donation of £5, the employee paying basic rate tax will only feel the loss of £3.90 from their pocket. A higher rate taxpayer will feel even less, only £3. The tax that would have been donated will be passed to the charity instead of the Inland Revenue.
Wales Council for Voluntary Action can act as the payroll giving agency for your local businesses, and distribute the donations each month to the charities chosen by their employees, including Boys and Girls clubs. Any SME employer setting up a new scheme will now qualify for a cash grant of between £300 to £500, and the Government will match employee’s donations up to £10 per month for the first six months of the scheme’s operation.
To take advantage of this benefit, and to find out more about how involve your local businesses in payroll giving, contact Iestyn Evans, WCVA’s Giving Wales Officer, by telephone on 02920 431777, or by email; ievans@wcva.org.uk or you can write to Baltic House, Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff Bay, CF10 5FH.
